Oito anos não é muito tempo mas na vida de Nídia é quase tudo, porque em 2016 ainda estávamos a chamá-la de Nídia Minaj e, acima de tudo, ainda não tínhamos ouvido o seu álbum de estreia, “Nídia é má, Nídia é fudida” — título que se tornou num grito de autodeterminação —, e tudo aquilo que veio graças a este sucesso, da notoriedade da crítica às colaborações estrelares com Fever Ray, Kelela ou Elza Soares. Com mais dois álbuns editados entretanto, Nídia continua a ser, indisputadamente, uma das vozes mais poderosas da família Príncipe. Mas o seu nome não fica apenas inscrito na produção, pois são também os seus sets como DJ que a têm colocado a viajar o mundo e a criar autênticos redemoinhos de fervilhante euforia por onde passa. Uma procura pela liberdade, diríamos de imediato, ainda mais tendo em conta a sua declaração de intenções no seu último álbum, “95 MINDJERES”, onde abordou explicitamente a luta revolucionária de Guiné-Bissau. Sigamos a líder, então.

Eight years may not seem like a long time to some, but in Nídia’s case it feels like a lifetime. Not just because back in 2016 we were still calling her Nídia Minaj, but more importantly because we had yet to hear her debut album, “Nídia é má, Nídia é fudida” — whose title became a cry of self-determination —, and everything that came with it, from critical acclaim to stellar collaborations with the likes of Fever Ray, Kelela, and Elza Soares. With two more albums edited in the meantime, Nídia is undoubtedly one of the most powerful voices in the family of artists recording for Príncipe. And it is not only as a producer that she has made a name for herself. Her DJ sets have also taken her around the world, stirring a whirlwind of euphoric frenzy wherever she goes. On a quest for freedom, especially considering the statement she made with her latest album, “95 MINDJERES”, an explicit reference to the revolutionary struggle in Guinea-Bissau. Let’s follow the leader!

Depois do estrondo da sua estreia, em 2019, com “Oratorio for the underworld”, Sophie Schnell, ou PYUR, pegou em todas as substâncias expelidas e, sobretudo, na sua energia, para as reorganizar numa obra superior de arquitectura sonora. “Lucid Anarchy”, editado no início deste ano na Subtext, resultou de um período de algum conflito pessoal e emocional, passado geograficamente entre a mega-urbe de Berlim, a beira-mar piscatória da Bretanha, as montanhas alpinas de Jura e os vales do Tirol. Cenários muito contrastantes entre si, de culturas e topografias bem díspares, que talvez tenham ajudado à impressionante dinâmica sonora da sua música. Como é de esperar, estas diferentes forças da Natureza acabaram por desempenhar um papel primordial de inspiração mas também de reconciliação, como um potente contraponto à nossa insignificante importância no meio disto tudo. Montanhas e vales, sim, também emocionais, como uma visualização perfeita da convulsão interior e da paz que efectivamente nos rodeia.

After her resounding debut in 2019 with “Oratorio for the underworld”, Sophie Schnell, aka PYUR, has reunited all of the previously discharged elements and her sweeping energy, and rearranged them into a superb piece of sound architecture. Released earlier this year on Subtext, “Lucid Anarchy” is the result of a period of certain personal and emotional turmoil lived between several geographical locations: the megalopolis of Berlin, a fishing village on the Breton coast, the Alpine landscapes of the Jura mountains and the valleys of Tyrol. Perhaps it was these culturally and topographically contrasting settings that contributed to the impressive sonic dynamics of PYUR’s music. It is easy to see how these differing natural forces could have played an essential role, providing not only inspiration, but also reconciliation, as a powerful counterpoint to our own insignificance before them. A kind of emotional mountain peaks and valleys that serve as a perfect visualisation of the inner turbulence and peace that actually surrounds us.

Talvez agora os dois mundos ao redor de Rrose já se cruzem sem grandes oposições, mas até há algum tempo a sua encarnação como Sutekh terá fechado o seu público na respectiva bolha. De 1997 a 2010, esgrimiu eloquentes argumentos em torno da electrónica pré-novo milénio, com tangente na IDM. Contudo, à medida que a discografia se estendia, sentiam-se outros e novos caminhos pela frente. É possível que seja por isso que nomes inesperados como Bob Ostertag ou Charlemagne Palestine são cruciais para que Sutekh termine e Rrose nasça. Na Sandwell District, onde editou as suas primeiras evidências, Rrose rapidamente esclareceu-nos da sua missão: techno maquinal e informado, de sangue berlinense, hipnótico e de suprema sedução. Paralelamente, interessou-se pela microtonalidade, James Tenney, Duchamp (de onde retirou o seu novo nome), pela fluidez de género, por música para filmes ou performances. Não é de estranhar que como DJ seja a soma destas coisas todas na procura do êxtase colectivo dentro das mais fulminantes ideias techno que hoje podemos vivenciar.

Perhaps today the two worlds around Rrose intersect without too much conflict, but it wasn’t so long ago that Rrose’s incarnation as Sutekh confined their audience to a kind of a bubble. Between 1997 and 2010, they made an eloquent case for the pre-new millennium sound of electronic music with a hint of IDM. But as their discography grew, so did the sense that new and different paths lay ahead. This may explain why such unexpected names as Bob Ostertag and Charlemagne Palestine marked the end of Sutekh and the birth of Rrose. On Sandwell District, where they released their first material, Rrose quickly made their mission clear: machine-like, intelligent techno with Berlin in its veins, hypnotic and highly seductive. Simultaneously, they became interested in microtonality, James Tenney, Duchamp (from whom they took their new name), gender fluidity, and film/performance music. Consequently, as a DJ they are the sum of all these elements, seeking to achieve collective ecstasy within the most vibrant techno ideas we can experience today.
